Fashion tech in 2026 was less about the future and more about the way we already shop. AI moved from suggesting to buying. Resale got bigger, faster and more live. Big tech learned it needs fashion brands to sell anything you wear. Here are the 10 stories that defined the year, and what each one means if you buy vintage.
The 10 stories
- eBay bought Depop. eBay closed its roughly $1.4 billion purchase of Depop in July. For now, Depop keeps its own app, fees and brand.
- AI started shopping for us. Google, Meta and Microsoft launched assistants that can check out for you. OpenAI pulled ChatGPT's own checkout in March.
- Vintage went live. 94% of TikTok Shop's US luxury resale revenue came from livestreams, and Whatnot raised $545 million.
- Fakes followed the logos. Entrupy's 2026 report put Goyard and Prada at the top for fake rates, and found nearly one in three clothing items unverifiable.
- Authentication went AI. TikTok Shop required luxury resale sellers to use one of five authentication partners, most of them built on AI.
- Glasses got smart, and stylish. Meta's Ray-Bans kept selling out, and Google brought in Warby Parker and Gentle Monster for its own glasses.
- Try-on went mainstream. Google built virtual try-on into Search and shut down its Doppl app.
- Resale took market share. ThredUp's report put global secondhand at $393 billion by 2030, with half of shoppers finding it on social.
- Clothes are getting passports. The EU's digital product passport for textiles moved closer, with rules expected in 2027.
- Fashion tech grew up. Reformation and Shein went public, Quince passed $2 billion in sales, and New York's AI disclosure rules took effect in July. Investors started backing the tools behind fashion as much as the brands.
The thread running through it all
Almost every big story this year was about trust. Can you trust an AI to buy for you? Can you trust a bag you only saw on a livestream? Can you trust that it is real? The tools got better at all three, but none of them replaces knowing what you are looking at. That is why we still write price guides, authentication guides and condition notes by hand.
What to watch in 2027
- Whether eBay brings its shipping and authentication tools to Depop.
- Whether AI assistants learn to handle one-of-one pieces, condition and offers.
- Whether try-on works from ordinary seller photos.
- The EU's final rules for clothing passports.
