For years, AI in fashion meant a chatbot that suggested a jacket. In 2026 the assistants started finishing the job. The industry calls it agentic commerce: you describe what you want, and an AI agent finds it, compares prices and checks out.
Who can actually buy for you
- Google. In January, Google, Shopify and about two dozen retailers and payment companies, including Etsy, Walmart, Target, Visa and Mastercard, launched the Universal Commerce Protocol, a shared standard for AI checkout. Gemini and AI Mode in Search now support checkout with Google Pay. In March, Gap became the first major fashion retailer to let shoppers finish a purchase inside the chat.
- Meta. On September 8, Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent, in the US on iOS, Android, the web and WhatsApp. It can search shops, compare prices and buy once you tap "Buy with Muse". Payment runs through Stripe's Link, which creates one-time card numbers so shops never see your real card.
- Others. Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity also offer in-chat checkout in the US.
The one that pulled back
OpenAI was first. In September 2025 it launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT with Shopify and Etsy. By March 2026 it had dropped the feature, saying checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility" it wanted. Fewer than 30 Shopify merchants reportedly went live. ChatGPT still recommends products, but purchases now finish on the shop's own checkout.
Not every retailer wants the agents either. Amazon only lets its own assistants buy on Amazon.
Why vintage is hard for an agent
Agents work best with new products: a stock photo, a size run and a price that is the same everywhere. Vintage breaks all three. Every piece is one of one. Sizes drift by decade. Condition is written in a seller's own words, and "light wear" means different things to different people. And on eBay, the price is often a starting point for an offer rather than a final number.
That is why, for now, agents are better at finding vintage than at judging it. Use them to search. Then read the listing, look at every photo and check the sold prices yourself. Our price guides show how.
What to watch in 2027
- Whether shopping inside AI chats grows beyond a handful of big retailers.
- Whether marketplaces like eBay open up to outside agents.
- How assistants handle returns, condition and offers, the parts vintage depends on.
