What moves the price
- The era. Pieces from Tom Ford's years as creative director, 1994 to 2004, carry the biggest premium. Velvet, horsebit hardware and slick 90s cuts are what collectors chase.
- The icons. The Jackie shoulder bag, anything with the horsebit, and bamboo handles. Named models hold value far better than unnamed ones.
- The material. Pony hair, suede and velvet ask more than coated GG canvas. Canvas is the easier way in.
- Condition at the edges. Check canvas corners, handle wear and the leather tag inside the bag. Worn corners are normal. Cracked coating is a price cut.
How to check what it actually sold for
Asking prices are a starting point. Sold prices are the truth. Before you buy or make an offer, run this check.
- Search the piece on eBay with the brand, the model name and the colour.
- Switch on the Sold items filter. The prices in green are what people actually paid.
- Match condition and size as closely as you can. Three to five close matches beat one perfect one.
- Add shipping to both sides. A cheap piece with $40 postage is not a cheap piece.
If the sold prices sit well below the ask, you have a case for an offer. If they sit near it, the listing is fairly priced and a small offer is the most you should try.
