A photo can hide a scratch. A livestream cannot. That simple idea turned live shopping into one of the biggest stories in resale this year.
TikTok Shop
TikTok says 94% of its US luxury resale revenue this year has come from livestreams, and that luxury resale sales are up 400% on last year, led by handbags and watches. Sellers have to be invited and must work with one of five authentication partners: Entrupy, Legitmark, CheckCheck, Legit App or Real Authentication. Big resellers like Fashionphile and Rebag now run several lives a day.
Whatnot
Whatnot started with trading cards and collectibles, and fashion is now its fastest-growing category. It raised $545 million in the third quarter of 2026, one of the largest fashion tech rounds of the year. Glossy profiled one vintage seller whose yearly revenue grew from about $25,000 to more than $250,000 after nearly four years of live auctions on the app.
eBay Live
eBay Live began with trading cards and expanded into luxury handbags, watches and fashion last year. In September, eBay opened New York Fashion Week with Endless Runway: The Archive, an exhibition of more than 150 archival American designer pieces curated by stylist Carlos Nazario. A live auction hosted by Jenna Lyons raised money for the CFDA, with lots from Calvin Klein Collection, Diane von Furstenberg, Proenza Schouler and Vera Wang.
Why it works for vintage
Vintage is one of one, and condition is everything. On a live, the seller can turn the bag over, open it, hold it to the light and answer questions in real time. Terms like "scratched hardware" mean something when you can see the scratch. The countdown helps sellers too, because it gives rare pieces a sense of urgency that a static listing never has.
How to buy on a live without regret
- Know your number first. Check sold prices before the show, not during it. Our price guides show how.
- Ask to see the inside. Linings, tags and corners are where problems hide.
- Check authentication and returns. Know who authenticates and what happens if the piece is not as shown.
- Do not chase the timer. A countdown is designed to rush you. Let it.
